The Wife of the Vice Chancellor of University of Uyo and President of University of Uyo Women Association (UWA), Mrs. Rosalyn Essien was on Monday honoured with award of "Ambassador Of Peace" by United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC) during this year’s United Nations International Day of Peace in recognition of Mrs. Essien’s efforts in conflict management, selfless services to better the lot of womanhood and society at large.

This year’s event took place at Judiciary Headquarters, Willington Bassey Way, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The 2020 United Nations International Day of Peace had it theme: "Sharpening Peace Together", organized by "May Peace Prevail on Earth International (World Peace Prayer Society) UNDPC", Nigeria, had awardees who have distinguished themselves in peace pact deals across Nigeria honoured with "Ambassador of Peace".

According to UN- POLAC, Peace Ambassador is awarded to individuals whose lives exemplify the benefit of others and is dedicated to the promotion of universal moral values, strong family life, interfaith, cooperation, international harmony, United Nations renewal, and is also responsible for establishing a goal culture of peace.

Mrs. Rosalyn Essien, one of the awardees who by profession specialises in dispute resolution, and has mediated on conflicts over the years, was officially honoured in this year International Day of Peace with an "Ambassador of Peace", an honour which organizers said was in recognition of her efforts in fostering peace and harmony among humanity. Mrs. Essien has also authored many books on conflict, which one of them is "Conflict Management" used in University of Uyo since 1991.

It could be recalled, Mrs. Rosalyn Essien on her efforts to give back to the society, launched two foundations, "Amathy Peace Pheromones; to give resolution without litigation" and "Payforphan; to touch lives" on September last year. All according to her during official launch said the foundations are to ensure a better society devoid rancour and calamity.

Mrs. Essien who many in University of Uyo have regarded as the most performing Wife of the Vice Chancellor since in inception of the University, has chaired several organizations in the university. She is currently the President of University of Uyo Women Association (UWA), Matron of Centre for Gender Studies and Matron of the Conference of University Women Association (CUWO).

Speaking with newsmen, Mrs. Essien said that her earnest desire is to see a better, prosperous and peaceful society where future generations inherit.

She also explained that her utmost desire is always to give back to the society, adding that she want to see a better society where jobs are given to unemployed, shelter is given to homeless and hope is given to the hopeless.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Ikono Local Government Area, Mr. Itoro Columbus, who was the Chairman on the occasion, said that peace is the fundamental principle the world needs.

According to him, "If peace prevails in the society, the wouldn’t have been any need for army, police and other forces. We need peace in our State, Nigeria, the world and within ourselves".

Speaking on the topic, "Sharping Peace Together Beyond the Necessary", the guest lecturer, Dr. Essien Akpanuko, said that peace is one of the many abstracts life has bestowed on us.

Dr. Akpanuko maintained that without peace, life is difficult to comprehend. He also pointed out that both rich and poor need peace to survive.

He further explained that peace means absence of hostility, reduction in conflict and freedom from violence, while admonished that if society wants to be at peace, its citizens must love themselves.
